Energy Secretary Ed Miliband is expected to reveal the cost of his green policies after promising to fight NIMBYs to generate more renewable energy.

Ed Miliband has been challenged to reveal the cost of his green policies after promising to fight nimbys to generate more renewable energy.

The Energy Secretary says he will “take on the blocks, the delays, the obstructionists” to reach the net-zero target by the end of the decade.

His remarks sparked fears that communities will have power pylons and wind farms thrust upon them, as well as rising bills to pay for them.

Conservative energy spokeswoman Claire Coutinho said: “Ed Miliband’s race to net zero for ideology will leave us in the worst of all worlds – with higher bills, jobs sent abroad and ever more trust in China.

“They must set out the costs of the complete systems immediately so that British billpayers know how much this will cost them.

The Secretary of Energy says that

The Energy Secretary says he will “take on the blocks, the delays, the obstructionists” to reach the net-zero target by the end of the decade.

“At the Energy UK conference in London yesterday, Mr Miliband pledged to end the UK’s dependence on fossil fuels by building more green energy infrastructure.

“The faster we go, the safer we become,” he said. “Every wind turbine we put up, every solar panel we install, every piece of grid we build helps protect families from future energy shocks.”

This is an argument that we need to have as a country because the opposite is also true. Every wind turbine we block, every solar farm we reject, every piece of grid we fail to build makes us less safe and more exposed.

Mr Miliband did not repeat Labour’s vote-winning election pledge to save households £300 a year on their heating bills.

He did not mention the figure he, Sir Keir Starmer and others used during the election campaign about the benefits of Labour’s GB Energy project.

After the election, Labor overturned a decades-old ban on onshore wind farms, approved four of the UK’s largest solar farms and set up green energy company GB Energy, with £8 billion funding.

Mr Miliband’s plans have raised concerns that the growing number of land-based energy projects will require a huge increase in pylons and overhead lines to connect to the grid.
